The borough's oldest pocket sits around Wampum Lake Park, built on the site of the 1670 grist mill raised by Thomas Eaton — the man the town is named for — near where a small trading village once grew up along the old Red Bank Turnpike at Main and Broad Streets. Locust Grove is documented separately as its own neighborhood in that same older section, distinct from the postwar subdivisions that fill most of Eatontown today, and a chimney there is far more likely to be original masonry than the factory-built flues found elsewhere in town.

Fort Monmouth is described in its own historical record as surrounded by three towns — Eatontown, Tinton Falls, and Oceanport — and the fort's historic district earned a National Register listing on March 12, 2014 (reference #13000764), recorded there under an Oceanport address.
