A failed liner is the most common reason a chimney is condemned. Here's how to spot one before it becomes a hazard.
1. Flaking or cracked flue tiles
Pieces of terracotta tile in the firebox are a clear sign the clay liner is breaking down and no longer protecting your home from heat and gases.
2. A failed inspection
A Level 2 camera inspection often reveals cracks and gaps you can't see from below — the usual trigger for relining.
3. White staining or a smoky smell
Efflorescence and persistent odors can indicate moisture and combustion byproducts getting where they shouldn't.
4. An unlined chimney
Many older homes were built with masonry chimneys that were never lined — these don't meet modern code and should be relined.
5. A new appliance
Installing a new stove or insert usually requires a correctly sized stainless-steel liner to vent safely.
